“It’s for your own good.” – June 3, 2018

Mark 2:23-28 New International Version (NIV)

23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”

27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Call to Worship & Congregational Prayer – June 3, 2018

CALL TO WORSHIP (responsive)

The God who answers in a day of trouble is among us,

And, behold, it is very good!

The God who lights a candle during the night is here,

And, behold, it is very good!

(ALL) Hearts, rejoice! For peace has triumphed over trouble, and morning has broken eternal night!

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER (responsive)

O Heavenly Father, what is it that keeps us from recognizing you?

Often we are so full of ourselves that it’s easy to block you right out of our lives.

Maybe it’s the way we interpret Scripture that obscures the signs pointing to you.

Perhaps we are guilty of being slow of heart when we don’t recognize you in our neighbor, or in the guise of the poor or the dispossessed.

Our eyes and ears have become so crammed with the sights and sounds of living that we simply fail to see you or to recognize your voice.

(ALL) Lord Jesus, help us to empty ourselves of all that hinders our awareness of your presence with us. Fill us with the joy of knowing your continuing presence, so that, like little Samuel in the temple, we too, recognize your voice and, like the disciples, follow your calling. Amen.

“That’s the Spirit” – May 27, 2018

Romans 8:12-17 New International Version (NIV)

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Call to Worship & Congregational Prayer – May 27, 2018

CALL TO WORSHIP

Though many places in the world are bound in war.

The peace of God is poured out for all people.

Though discord and struggle have become factors in the lives of the people.

The love of God is lavished on all people.

Let us praise the God of love and peace.

Let us listen for God’s words of peace and justice for all people. AMEN.

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER

God of majesty and power, how awesome you are to us!

The mountains tremble, the seas roar at the sound of your name! Yet you have chosen to come to us in love and tenderness.

You have called us to be people who will act in ways of peace and justice in your world. Open our hearts and our spirits, Lord, to hear your word, and having heard, to act in ministries of hope and peace for all your earth.

These things we pray in Jesus’ Name. AMEN.

“Open Minds”

Acts 1:1-11 New International Version (NIV)

In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to themover a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

Call to Worship and Congregational Prayer – May 13, 2018

CALL TO WORSHIP

Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers.

But their delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law they meditate day and night.

They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.

For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Come, let us draw near our Lord in the fellowship of His people!

Amen

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER

Almighty God, who gave your Son Jesus Christ a realm, where all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; make us loyal followers of our living Lord, that we may always hear his word follow his teachings, and live in his Spirit.

Almighty and everlasting God, it is your will to restore all things to Christ, whom you have anointed priest for ever and ruler of creation.

Lord, hasten the day when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that he is Lord to your eternal glory.

Grant that all the people of the earth, now divided by the power of sin, may be united under the glorious and gentle rule of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns forever.  Amen.

“God has no favorites”

Acts 10:32-43 New International Version (NIV)

Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’ So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.”

Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

“We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross, but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
