“God is Loose in this World!” – Jan 7, 2018

Thought Provoker

My Wishes for You:

“When you are lonely, I wish you LOVE. When you are down, I wish you JOY. When you are troubled, I wish you PEACE. When things look empty, I wish you HOPE. May you be surrounded by HAPPINESS. Peace & Joy Always! We wish you and your loved ones a very Happy and Blessed New Year!”

The Written Word

Mark 1:4-11

And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with[a] water, but he will baptize you with[b] the Holy Spirit.”

At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

Scripture Reading

Gen 1:1-5

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hoveringover the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

Congregational Prayer of Confession

(Leader) Let us confess the harm we have done to God’s world, by failing to care for it, and by turning away from God’s ways:

(Leader) We confess that we have failed to give you glory for the wonder and beauty of creation

(People) Forgive us Lord, and heal our land.

(Leader) We confess that we have failed to care properly for animals and birds, and for the land itself. We’re sorry, Lord.

(People) Forgive us Lord, and heal our land.

(Leader) We confess that our greed and comfort have led to pollution and waste, and have caused the poor to suffer.

(People) Forgive us Lord, and heal our land.

(Leader) We confess the lack of understanding between city and countryside, between farmers and consumers.

(People) Forgive us Lord, and heal our land.

(Leader) We confess that the land has suffered as we have failed to let you be God in every area of our national life.

(People) Forgive us Lord, and heal our land.

(All) Hear our prayers

Call to Worship

(Leader) From the waters of Creation, the earth sprang forth.

(People) From the waters of a womb, God’s blessed Son was given to us.

(People) Praise be to God, whose loving gifts and presence have called us together.

(Leader) Let us shout our love to God for God’s abundant love

Prayer for the Pastor
Dear God, I lift my pastor to You in prayer, that You may bless him with wisdom, direction, & humility. I pray for my pastor’s physical & spiritual health- for proper sleep, diet, & rest, as well as time to pray & study Your Word. And finally, let my pastor remain faithful to You in ministry and to family, that Your name can be proclaimed with honor.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

The Written Word

Luke 2:22-40

22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[a]), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[b]

25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss[c] your servant in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31     which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”

33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

36 There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[d] She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.

Scripture Reading

Isaiah 61:10-62:3

10 I delight greatly in the Lord;
my soul rejoices in my God.
For he has clothed me with garments of salvation
and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,
as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up
and a garden causes seeds to grow,
so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness
and praise spring up before all nations.

62 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet,
till her vindication shines out like the dawn,
her salvation like a blazing torch.
The nations will see your vindication,
    and all kings your glory;
you will be called by a new name
that the mouth of the Lord will bestow.
You will be a crown of splendor in the Lord’s hand,
a royal diadem in the hand of your God.

Make a Joyful Noise!

How do you serve the Lord?  How do you continue your spiritual growth?  Can you make a joyful noise? How about serving in the choir?

They meet once a week for practice and get the best seats in the house on Sunday.  Kidding aside, this is a wonderful ministry and fellowship opportunity.  You don’t have to sound like one of the gospel singers on the radio – you just need to have a desire to serve God and sing his praises.

Want to give it a shot?  Join us Wednesday evening for practice in the main sanctuary beginning at 5:30pm or contact Pastor Randy or Janice D.

Acts – Bible Study

What happened after Christ rose to Heaven?  How did the Christian Church begin?  What was the purpose of the new church, anyway?

Join us to find out!  This Wednesday at 6:30pm as we start an adult Bible study on the book of Acts, led by Pastor Randy.  Meet us at the rear of the sanctuary – our study is open to everyone!
